Tuina Massage (推拿)
What tuina is — therapeutic TCM massage — how it differs from regular massage, and what to expect.
Tuina (推拿, tuī ná) is TCM therapeutic massage, using specific techniques to move qi and blood, release tension, and support the body. Here’s what it involves.
How it works
A practitioner uses pressing, kneading, rolling, and other hand techniques on specific points and areas. Unlike a relaxing massage, tuina is therapeutic — targeted at a specific condition.
Common uses
- Musculoskeletal pain (back, neck, shoulder, joints)
- Stiffness and restricted movement
- Digestive issues
- Rehabilitation after injury
What to expect
- A session is typically 20–40 minutes.
- You’ll be asked to change position during the session.
- Some soreness afterward is possible (like after exercise).
Practical tips
- Tell the practitioner about injuries, pain, or conditions.
- Wear comfortable clothing that allows movement.
- It’s often used alongside acupuncture or herbal treatment.
⚠️ Tuina is generally safe but has contraindications. Discuss your health history first.
