Moxibustion (艾灸)

What moxibustion is, how the herbal smoke/warmth is used, and what to expect.

Moxibustion (艾灸, āi jiǔ) is a TCM therapy that uses the heat of a dried herb (mugwort) to warm specific points on the body. Here’s what it involves.

How it works

A cone or stick of dried mugwort (艾) is burned near (or on) an acupuncture point to deliver deep warmth. This is believed to warm qi, boost energy, and relieve pain or weakness.

Types

  • Moxa stick — a smoldering stick held near the point (most common).
  • Moxa cone — a small cone placed on a point (often with a protective pad).
  • Indirect moxibustion — warmth delivered through an object or at a distance.

What to expect

  • A warm, soothing sensation (not burning).
  • A session is typically 15–30 minutes.
  • Often used for chronic pain, cold conditions, fatigue, and digestive issues.

Practical tips

  • Tell the practitioner about any skin sensitivity.
  • It produces a herbal scent — it’s normal.
  • Often combined with acupuncture.

⚠️ Moxibustion is generally safe when done properly, but has contraindications. Discuss your health history first.
