Herbal Medicine in TCM

How Traditional Chinese Medicine uses herbs and formulas, how they're prepared, and what to expect.

Herbal medicine is one of the most widely used TCM treatments in China. Here’s how it works, in plain English.

โš ๏ธ Herbs are medicine. They can interact with other medications and aren’t safe for everyone. Always tell your doctors about all medications, including any herbs, and only use herbs under a qualified practitioner’s guidance.

How it works

A TCM practitioner designs a formula โ€” a combination of herbs โ€” tailored to your specific diagnosis (your pattern). Formulas are adjusted as your condition changes.

Common forms

  • Decoctions (ๆฑค) โ€” dried herbs boiled into a liquid, drunk daily
  • Granules โ€” pre-extracted powder, mixed with water (convenient)
  • Pills and capsules โ€” for maintenance or chronic conditions
  • External use โ€” poultices, washes, or baths

What to expect

  • A typical course is several days to weeks, with follow-up to adjust the formula.
  • Formulas are individualized โ€” the same condition in two people may get different formulas.
  • Prepare and take as instructed; some require specific timing.

Practical tips for international patients

  • Ask for an English explanation of your formula and what it’s for.
  • Keep a list of herbs taken (for customs and your home doctor).
  • Confirm interactions with any Western medication you’re on.
