I’m 62, from Manchester, with severe osteoarthritis in my right knee. In the UK I was told to wait, and the pain was getting worse every month. I looked at options in China.
Choosing the hospital
I shortlisted Grade III-A hospitals in Chengdu (a hub I’d already visited) and asked for quotes. I chose a center with a strong orthopedic department and an international service. They sent a written plan and cost estimate in English.
The visit
- Pre-op: Consultation, bloods, and scans. The team reviewed my case in an MDT meeting — that reassured me.
- Surgery: A single-knee replacement. I was in hospital about a week.
- Physiotherapy: This was the part I’d underestimated. Daily physio in hospital made a real difference to how I moved when I left.
- Follow-up: I arranged a return visit a few weeks later, then continued physio back home.
Cost
The total was a fraction of what I understood the procedure to cost in the UK, and it included the implant, hospital stay, and in-hospital physio. I paid via WeChat Pay with my card.
