A checklist of the questions to ask a hospital, doctor, and about your quote — before you book travel and treatment in China.
The right questions protect you and make the whole experience smoother. Use this checklist when choosing a hospital, reviewing your case with a doctor, or getting a quote.
💡 Tip: Ask these in writing where possible (email is fine). Written answers are your records.
About the hospital
- Is the hospital Grade III-A (三甲) and what are its accreditations (e.g., JCI)?
- Is there a dedicated center/department for my condition?
- How many of my specific procedure do you perform per year?
- Do you have an international patient department with English support?
- What is your policy for complications and how would I be cared for?
- Can I get written, itemized billing in English?
About the doctor
- How many years of experience do you have in my specific condition/procedure?
- How many of this exact procedure have you personally performed?
- What are the typical outcomes / success rates for my case?
- What are the main risks for my specific case?
- Will you be the surgeon/lead throughout, or will others be involved?
- Can you share your credentials, training, and any publications?
About the treatment
- What is my diagnosis and how are you confirming it?
- What are my treatment options, including alternatives?
- What is the realistic expected outcome for me?
- How long will the hospital stay be?
- What is the recovery timeline and what can I expect?
- What follow-up will I need after treatment (and can it be done remotely)?
- What medications will I be on, and how do I get them after I leave?
- Are there lifestyle or activity restrictions after the procedure?
About the quote & payment
- Is this price all-inclusive, or are there separate charges?
- What is specifically included and what is not?
- What is the implant/device brand (if applicable) and its cost?
- Is there a deposit, and is it refundable?
- What is the payment schedule (when do I pay each part)?
- What happens to costs if the procedure is more complex than planned?
- Are follow-up visits and post-discharge medication included?
- Can I get the itemized bill and records in English for my insurance?
About logistics
- Can you help with my visa (invitation/confirmation letter)?
- Is an interpreter provided for my consultations?
- What transport and accommodation do you recommend or arrange?
- What should I prepare and bring (records, imaging, medications)?
