Preparing for Your Trip: Records, Health & Vaccinations
How to prepare medically before you travel to China for treatment โ gathering records, fitness to fly, vaccinations, and what to bring.
Good preparation is what makes your trip go smoothly and your treatment effective. Here’s how to get medically ready before you fly.
1. Gather your medical records
The more you bring, the better the first consultation. Collect:
- Diagnosis and history โ written summary of your condition
- Imaging โ X-rays, CT, MRI, ultrasound (as files/DICOM on a USB if available, plus reports)
- Lab results โ blood tests, pathology reports
- Prior treatments โ what you’ve tried, and how you responded
- Current medications โ a full list (name, dose, frequency)
- Allergies โ drugs, foods, contrast, latex
- Past surgeries & procedures
- Family medical history (if relevant)
๐ก Get copies in English if your original records are in another language. We can help translate key documents into Chinese for your doctors (and provide English copies for your home doctor).
2. Fitness to fly
- Ask your doctor if you’re fit to fly โ especially if you have a recent cardiac, respiratory, or surgical condition.
- Manage your condition before travel (e.g., optimize blood pressure, glucose).
- Long flights โ stay hydrated, move around, and follow your doctor’s advice on blood clots (especially after surgery).
- Carry a medical summary in your hand luggage (see below).
3. Vaccinations
- Check if you need any travel vaccinations for China (most are not required, but confirm for your situation).
- If you’re immunosuppressed or have a chronic condition, consult your doctor before travel about any vaccines and timing.
- There are generally no entry vaccination requirements for most visitors to China, but verify current rules.
4. What to carry in hand luggage
Keep these with you on the plane (not in checked baggage):
- A written medical summary (in English) โ your condition, key diagnoses, allergies
- Current medications in original packaging (plus a translated list)
- A copy of your passport, visa, and insurance details
- Emergency contact for a family member or our support
- Your medical ID card (we can prepare one in Chinese)
5. Before you leave
- Confirm your appointment and quote in writing.
- Sort out your visa (see Visa guide).
- Arrange your trip logistics โ flights, accommodation, transport, interpreter (we can do this).
- Notify your insurer if applicable.
