Step 5 · Your Visit

You’ve booked and prepared — now the day itself. Here’s what to expect, from arriving at the hospital to getting your first results.

The outpatient day

1. Arrive early — 30–60 minutes before your appointment time.
2. Check in at the reception or registration desk with your ID and appointment confirmation.
3. See the doctor — the consultation, questions, and any immediate orders for tests.
4. Tests & imaging — blood work, scans, etc. may be done same-day or scheduled for later.
5. Pay at the payment window (WeChat/Alipay) and collect prescriptions or schedule follow-ups.

If you’re admitted (inpatient)

1. Admission — paperwork, a deposit (住院押金), and assignment of a ward and doctor.
2. Treatment — surgery or procedures, with a nursing team.
3. Daily rounds — the medical team reviews your progress.
4. Discharge settlement — final cost reconciliation; overpayment refunded.
5. Discharge — you receive a discharge summary and follow-up instructions.

Communication & logistics

• Interpreter / companion: if you’re not confident in English communication, a bilingual companion or hospital interpreter makes a real difference. Many international departments offer this; some patients bring their own.
• Family visits: know the hospital’s visiting hours if someone is staying with you.
• Phone: keep your Chinese number active for appointment reminders and test-result alerts.

Practical tips

• Bring a small bag of essentials (medications, charger, comfortable clothes) if you expect a long day.
• Write down what the doctor says — or record the consultation if the hospital allows it.
• Confirm how and when you’ll receive your test results (app, portal, or in person).

💡 Keep a paper trail. Photograph receipts, notes, and your schedule. You’ll want these for insurance claims and follow-up.
