Preparing to Travel

Before you fly: visa, medical records translation, travel, accommodation, and what to bring.

Everything before you board the plane. A little preparation here prevents most of the stress that comes later.

1. Visa

  • Medical visitors typically use a medical (S2) visa or a visitor visa — requirements vary by nationality.
  • Start the visa process early; you may need an invitation or confirmation from the hospital.
  • Keep copies of all medical documents handy — some visa processes ask for them.

2. Medical records & translation

  • Gather your full medical history, imaging, and lab results.
  • Decide whether to translate key documents into Chinese (recommended for smooth care).
  • Make digital copies (photos/PDF) in addition to physical copies.

3. Travel & accommodation

  • Book flights with buffer time — you may need rest before a procedure.
  • Choose accommodation near the hospital to make appointments and follow-ups easier.
  • Arrange airport pickup if available (some hospital services or we can help).

4. Money & payments

  • Set up WeChat Pay / Alipay with a foreign card (see Payment & Cost).
  • Bring some RMB cash for small payments.
  • Confirm your insurance covers the trip and understand the reimbursement process.

5. What to pack

  • Passport & copies, visa documents
  • All medical records & imaging (physical + digital)
  • Current medications + a written list
  • Comfortable clothes (for hospital stays), basic toiletries
  • Phone, charger, portable charger, adapter
  • Any personal comfort items for a long stay

💡 Build in rest. Travel + time-zone shift before a procedure is a lot. If possible, arrive a day or two early to settle in.

Next: When you’re on the ground, start with Choosing a Hospital or head straight to Booking if you’ve already decided.
