How to pay in a Chinese hospital, insurance options, and what treatment actually costs.
Cost is one of the top reasons patients choose China — but the payment process can be confusing if you’ve never paid at a Chinese hospital. Here’s how it actually works.
How to pay
WeChat Pay / Alipay with a foreign card
Since recent policy changes, foreign-issued Visa and Mastercard can be linked to WeChat Pay and Alipay — this is now the smoothest way to pay at most hospitals.
- Install WeChat or Alipay.
- Add your foreign card as a payment method (follow the in-app steps; there may be a small fee and per-transaction limits).
- Pay at the hospital by scanning the QR code at the payment window.
Other options
- Cash (RMB) — useful for small payments and places without card terminals.
- UnionPay card — a China-issued card is accepted everywhere without issues.
- Bank card / credit card — some international departments accept international cards directly.

Insurance: two models
- Direct billing — the hospital bills your international insurer directly. Few Chinese hospitals offer this for foreign patients; confirm before you rely on it.
- Reimbursement (most common) — you pay upfront, then claim from your insurer afterward. Keep every document:
- 发票 (fapiao / official invoice)
- Itemized charges (费用明细)
- Discharge summary & medical records
- Diagnosis certificate
⚠️ Ask in advance: confirm your insurer’s rules and whether they accept Chinese hospital invoices. Not every policy covers foreign hospitalizations the same way.
What to expect on cost
- Get a written quote before treatment, and ask what is included and excluded.
- Costs vary by hospital, city, complexity, and length of stay — a simple case and a complex case can differ many-fold.
