How Insurance Works for Treatment in China
A plain-English overview of your options — direct billing vs. pay-and-reimburse — and what to confirm with your insurer.
Here’s how insurance generally works for treatment in China, in plain English.
Step 1: Check your policy before you travel
- Confirm your policy covers treatment abroad / in China.
- Ask whether your insurer has direct-billing (network) arrangements with Chinese hospitals.
- Note any pre-authorization or guarantee letter requirements.
Step 2: Choose your model
- Direct billing (if available): the hospital bills your insurer directly — less cash outlay for you. You may still need a guarantee letter from your insurer.
- Pay-and-reimburse (most common): you pay the hospital, then submit a claim to your insurer.
Step 3: Keep every document
- Itemized invoices (in Chinese and English)
- Diagnosis and treatment records
- Prescriptions and medication lists
- Proof of payment (receipts / card statements)
- Your insurance policy details and claim form
⚠️ Always confirm with your insurer before you travel. Coverage, direct-billing availability, and documentation requirements vary by insurer and policy.
