What to do in a medical emergency in China โ emergency numbers, how to get to a hospital, and practical steps.
โ ๏ธ In a medical emergency, call 120 (China’s emergency number) immediately. If you can’t call, ask nearby people for help or have someone call. Do not wait.
Emergency numbers
- 120 โ Medical emergency (ambulance) โ the number to call first
- 110 โ Police (can help coordinate in an emergency)
- 119 โ Fire (also assists in some emergencies)
- Your embassy/consulate โ keep their number; they can help with urgent matters
๐ก Save these in your phone before you travel, and keep a printed copy in your bag.
What to do in an emergency
- Call 120 โ describe the situation and your location. If English help is needed, also call your hotel front desk or our support line.
- Stay calm and stay with the patient โ keep them still if there’s possible injury.
- Have your details ready โ name, passport number, address, and any known conditions/medications.
- Let emergency services lead โ they’ll transport to the nearest appropriate hospital.
Getting to a hospital (if not 120)
- Ride-hailing (DiDi) or taxi to the nearest Grade III-A hospital’s emergency department.
- Major hospitals have 24-hour emergency departments (ๆฅ่ฏ) โ no appointment needed.
- Tell the driver “hospital” + the name, or show them the hospital address.
At the emergency department
- International patients are seen in the emergency department; ask for the international service for English support.
- Bring ID/passport, and if possible, a translated summary of your medical history.
- Ask for an English note of the treatment given, for your records and insurance.
Practical tips
- Know your hospital โ if you’re under treatment, confirm the nearest emergency department and how to reach it.
- Keep a medical ID โ a card with your conditions, allergies, and medications (in Chinese, we can provide).
- Keep your phone charged and have offline maps of your area.
