What's Included in a Treatment Quote

A breakdown of what a treatment quote usually covers and what it often excludes โ€” so there are no surprises.

A written, itemized quote is the single most important document before you travel. But quotes aren’t created equal โ€” what’s included and what’s excluded varies. Here’s how to read one and what to ask.

What a good quote usually includes

  • Consultation fee โ€” the specialist’s first review
  • Surgical/procedure fee โ€” the main treatment
  • Anesthesia fee โ€” for the procedure
  • Hospital stay โ€” the room(s) and ward for the nights you’re in
  • Tests & diagnostics โ€” blood work, imaging (X-ray, CT, MRI), ECG, etc.
  • Implant/device (if applicable) โ€” the implant, stent, valve, or IOL (with brand)
  • Medication โ€” in-hospital medication (sometimes post-discharge is separate)
  • Physiotherapy โ€” in-hospital sessions (often a set number)

What it often excludes (ask about these)

  • Travel & airfare โ€” your flights to/from China
  • Accommodation โ€” hotel or apartment during your stay
  • Interpreter โ€” language support (we arrange this)
  • Transport โ€” airport and city transfers
  • Follow-up visits โ€” post-discharge appointments (in China or at home)
  • Post-discharge medication โ€” sometimes billed separately
  • Imaging/records copies โ€” extra films or digital copies
  • Additional procedures โ€” anything found during surgery not in the original plan
  • Emergency care โ€” unrelated to the planned treatment
  • Tips/gratuities โ€” not required, but customary in some contexts

The questions to ask about a quote

When you get a quote, confirm each of these in writing:

  1. Is this an all-in price, or are there separate charges?
  2. What specifically is included in the price?
  3. What is not included and how much would it cost?
  4. What is the implant/device brand (and its cost if separate)?
  5. How many follow-up visits are included?
  6. Is there a deposit, and is it refundable?
  7. What is the payment schedule (when do I pay each part)?
  8. What happens if the procedure is more complex than expected โ€” how much more?
  9. Are post-discharge medications included?
  10. Can I get the itemized bill and records in English for insurance?

๐Ÿ’ก Get it in writing. A verbal quote is not a quote. Ask for an itemized, written document (in English) before you commit.

โš ๏ธ Prices and what’s included vary by hospital and case. This is general guidance. Always confirm in writing with your specific hospital.

Why this matters

A clear quote protects you from surprises. If a hospital won’t give a detailed written quote, that’s a red flag. A good international department will happily provide an itemized breakdown and explain it in English.
